Records, 1959-1961.

The accession consists of papers describing Scripps Institution of Oceanography Naga Expedition, (August 1959-March 1961). The records include cruise reports for R/V Stranger, distribution lists, project summaries, maps and scientific reports. The records were collected by James L. Faughn, project officer of Naga Expedition and master of R/V Stranger. Naga Expedition grew out of an agreement signed by the United States, the government of South Vietnam and the government of Thailand in June 1958. Its goals were "to foster science in Southeast Asia" to train oceanographers and fisheries scientists to study the marine resources of the Gulf of Thailand and adjacent portions of the South China Sea and to demonstrate the importance of oceanography and marine biology in relation to fisheries.
